I always said homework was bad for me. @ 06:29 am

[info]arinoch:

For the longest time while I was in school, highschool primarily, I’d always try to find something resembling an excuse to put off, avoid doing, or just plain forget about ever doing anything that vaguely resembled homework. Sure, eventually, most of it would get done anyway–not without the insistance of my parents, of course. But on a personal standpoint, I didn’t see a whole lot of point to it. You spend an hour or so in class beating a topic to death, and just when you think it can’t get any more beaten to death, the teacher throws an asignment at you that takes you an additional couple hours when you get home. And you usually don’t end up learning a whole lot more from the extra work than you did in class–or, at least, I didn’t. Now, rince and repeat the same procedure for every class you have the privelege of attending over the course of a semester. Head, meet pressure cooker. No wonder we threw small parties at the end of June.

Flash forward to my post-highschool life, and people are starting to clue into that fact. Particularly, the people running Prince of Wales Public School in Barrie Ontario, which conveniently enough is about half an hour from where I was living when I did the highschool thing. Last year, after some arm twisting, they managed to ban the asigning of homework. And, surprise of surprises, they’re noticing grades are actually going up.

“As a whole we found marks have started to go up, our Education Quality and Accountability Office data has improved since we started,” Jan Olson, the school’s principal said in an interview with CTV’s Canada AM.

He says there are also fewer behavioural issues as a result of the ban, and academic improvement was observed across the entire spectrum of students: wealthy and poor, special needs and gifted.

See, mom? I told you homework was bad for me.

Windows Update WUAUCLT Command Line Switches @ 09:31 am

[info]technology_msg:

The command line switches to WUAUCLT — the Windows Update Automatic Updates client — are documented, just not very coherently. There’s quite a few of them, but the only ones I need regularly are the ones to force update checks. They work with Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003, though they make work on other versions.

These checks are typically done when you restart the update service on the client, which can be done manually by restarting the service.

net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

Even then, a lot of times I’ll want to verify on the WSUS server that there aren’t any more updates remaining for a particular host; I’m too impatient to wait for a client to report in on its own.

wuauclt /detectnow

The detectnow switch will force a relatively immediate query to the WSUS server to see if there are any updates that are needed. If there are, the yellow shield will appear in the system tray. This is usually pretty quick, within 20-30 seconds.

wuauclt /r /ReportNow

The ReportNow switch will force the client to send updated status to the WSUS server. It may take a minute or two for the server to reconcile and display the updated status.

If things still aren’t working, the Windows Update log can be found at %systemroot%\WindowsUpdate.log. The log file — strangely verbose, for Microsoft — is just text and viewable in Notepad. If the server you’re trying to connect to is crapping out, or your group policy is pointing you to the wrong server, the proof will be in there.

1970s/80s mystery thriller? @ 09:46 pm

[info]nygoldfish54, posting in [info]whatwasthatbook:
Current Mood: thoughtful

hey everyone! Someone just recommended this group to me and I joined right away with a question!

My mom was describing to me a mystery/thriller that she read in the early 1980s (between 1980 and 1982). The basic plot is that a mentally damaged man snaps and kills his (abusive) mother. He then goes across the country stealing people's identities and killing women in whom he sees his mother - basically killing his mother over and over again. My mom recalls (although she may be incorrect on this one) that the muder weapon was a stiletto. She would have sworn that the book was called "Stiletto," but since we can't find it anywhere, that is obviously not the title.

I'm dying to read this story and we just can't find it. It was probably published in the 70s or early 80s. I doubt in the 60s, but who knows. Has anyone read or heard of this book and knows what the title is/who the author is/where to find it?

Thanks so much :)

Boofles, Child Star, mirrors, LA @ 07:22 pm

FOUND! Mirror, by Graham Masterton

This is a book I read sometime during the early-mid '90s. It was a weird sort-of horror/thriller set in LA and the main thing I remember was a child star from the '30s/'40s named Boofles or Booflz who I think was dead, possibly haunting a place. Boofles was an adorable little boy with, as I recall, curly blonde hair who turns out to be some kind of evil spirit--I think he might've been murdered. Someone (a man?) was investigating the haunting or at any rate discovered he could somehow enter Boofles's world by going through the mirror--I seem to remember there was an Alice Through the Looking Glass sort of them, or it was referenced. The mirror-world is completely freaky (evil). Also, I remember the word "glitterati" was used a couple of times because I picked up the word and my Mom commented on it. (The weird story was set against the glittering movie industry.)

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Listen to more of my friends’ internet radeo shows,
Read more books,

and more, which I won’t list here.
So tonight, my friend Shannon was doing a radeo show that specializes in Women in music. I’d been wanting to check this out, but I was either in class, or out of the country. Tonight, I was home, I was free, and I had winamp at my finger tips, so I turned it on. She did a one-hour feature on the indigo girls. I’d heard a lot about them over the years, but believe it or not, had never been exposed to their music. I found that I liked most of their songs, but the one I especially liked was called Fleat of Hope. As I listened to the song, It reminded me of my love for water and the ocean, and how there are times when I wish I still had some sotr of body of water near by to invelop and calm me when things get too rough or stressful. After all, in chinese medicine, the water personality is the one who is deep, calm, and introspective. So I am going to post this video I found, and I hope you all enjoy it.

# 1 The Tale of Hill Top Farm by Susan Wittig Albert @ 10:41 pm

[info]writingismyzen, posting in [info]bookshare:
Current Mood: indifferent
Current Music: Delerium

My goal for 2010 is to read more and to keep track of it better.  Here is book # 1 for 2010!

Title: The Tale of Hill Top Farm
Author: Susan Wittig Albert
Genre: Historical Mystery
Reason for Reading: This is the Beatrix Potter mystery series.  I have always really liked her.  I feel like we are kindred spirits,
women who are writers (I am aspiring to be anyway) and naturalists trying to find a place for themselves in the world.
Time Period / Location: 1905 England's Lake District
Cover:

Worst part:  I don't mind being misdirected, this series is mystery after all.  But when you open a book
with a person's death, the whole way someone will read it is to look for the person who did it right?  This is
not the case with the actual plot of this book.  You really don't get what is the actual mystery until the last 3
chapters of the book.  It's not what you are looking for, let me put it that way.
Also, I'm not really big on the talking animals, I'm sure it was included as an acknowledgement of Potter's work
on her "little books", but it is very distracting in a lot of scenes.   Even the characters in the book tell the animals
to quit chattering or meowing, as they can't "understand" what the animals say because humans don't speak cat
or dog speak.
Best part: The historical details that Ms. Albert uses are simply wonderful.  You really get the feeling that she just
watched these events unfold and then wrote them down.  Her use of place and character are spot on.
Grade: B
Recommended for: Anyone who enjoys novels with very seem less historical details.   People who like mystery.
Also, anyone interested in Beatrix Potter, despite it's fictional context, it has certain aspects of her life included that
are interesting.

I am going to read the next 3 in the series as I got them all half price at a local used book store.

Today turned out to be emergency “pick up crap I forgot I didn’t have” day. Convenient enough, seeing as it picked today to be several varieties of cold. Still, the trip wasn’t a total loss. I did manage to survive the insane crowds that apparently decided today was also the day to be crammed into every store from wall Mart to Food Basics, and everywhere in between. Standing in one of those stores–I think it might have been Wall Mart, I accidentally ran across a nifty song by a singer I hadn’t heard about until today. I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of it before, though. The song’s by Chris Daughtry, and is apparently a little over 3 years old. I’ve had the song in my head since I came home, so on random impulse, I yanked the album. If anyone wants it, fire a comment at me–it’s free, or as free as one can get it.

The song, called “Over You”, is also up on Youtube–although they were nice enough to turn off the embedding options, so you get a clicky clicky instead. Now, I just have two questions, one of which I’ll search out eventually. Which movie’s sound track does this song belong to? And, why did no one inform me of this? I feel cheated now.

2009 reflections and just an update in general @ 07:45 pm

[info]musicgirl1984:
Current Location: the desk at my apartment
Current Mood: reflective
Current Music: the very loud heater in the other room

ok, so I'm a little late with the happy new year update. Why you may ask? i at this point really don't know. I had the idea I wanted to sit down do my reflections and bla bla bla but i just didn't feel like writing. So, here I am on this cold Wednesday night in January going to share my musings with you all. Because well, I'm sure you've missed me. I was doing well there for a while updating every day and then poof i disappeared again. And, here i am.

Ok, before I begin with what has happened in my so exciting life thus far in 2010 I shall reflect on 2009. Now, lucky me, I went back and read my journal over the last year not too long ago and I know one of the main things i wanted to happen in 09 was to find happiness again. i had been in so much pain at the beginning of January last year and I wanted it to go away. Now looking back and I know I haven't shared every detail of what has happened in my personal life on here simply because I think deep down I knew the decisions I made regarding my love life weren't exactly the smart ones. Let's just say because I couldn't seem to stay away from a certain someone, I once again got burned. The good thing that came out of it, was I finally saw what kind of person he really was, and i don't think anything would ever make me go back there again. Now, I've said this before and I know no one believes me, and sometimes i'm not sure if I believe myself, but i truly believe this last incident was the straw that broke the cammels back so to speak. that being said, Its been 2 months since we've spoken and I feel pretty great about it. There are a few unanswered questions that I may never get the answers to but at this point, who cares. The point is, things weren't what they seemed and probably never were. and, I need to put that behind me and move on. A good thing that came out of 2009 was Cody. He probably was the best thing. I had wanted a dog for months and I finally got one as you all know last February. He is a delight and the love of my life. I miss him every day I am here in the apartment, but i do believe this is a better set up. It wasn't fair for mom and dad to have to come and pick me up so late at night and cart me around so much. I like the apartment and all, I think next year i will want to live on my own if I don't live with Lindsay that is. I'm enjoying it here, and I am getting a new roommate next week and she seems very nice, but having the place to myself also was nice.
Another good thing that happened in 2009 was going back to grad school and getting into a program that I absolutely love. I feel in control here and that I will make something of myself and be successful. So, over all I am well on my way to happiness again. I'd say 2009 wasn't the greatest year, but it certainly wasn't the worst. A lot of good came out of it along with the bad. but that's what life is about, taking the good with the bad always. I'ts how you learn and grow into the person you are.

As for what i've been up to. I spent new years Eve with Becca a friend from the program. IT was last minute, but it was a lot of fun. We just hung out, ate pizza, and watched the proposal. very good movie by the way. I came back to the apartment last Saturday and have been here all week. My mom and dad both have stoppped by to visit shortly and that was by far the highlight of the week. Mom brought some rugs for the apartment yesterday and she surprised me with dinner from wendy's. She said she felt better I was eating something other than the prepared meals i usually eat. i have the best mom by far. *smile* Then my dad brought my other laptop back tonight. Thankfully nothing was wrong with it. Some setting was messed up on it that's all. The guy didn't even charge my dad for it. They do a lot of work for each other so, it wasn't a big deal. He also brought a DVD player for out in the other room so that Sahana my roommate and i can watch moviews and what not. I do have 2 open rooms and they could be filled yet, but we'll see.

I added on a 4th class. After getting all my grades and them all being a's I realized i can handle 4 classes as a grad. IT's hectic and all i seem to do is study, but it is well worth it if I get out of here in a reasonable amount of time. So, i picked up a 4th class. I have class Tues Wed and Thurs this coming semester. I only have one late night hthough on Wed. Unfortunately those are my two hardest classes stats and med info but oh well. there was nothing I could do there. Classes start in like 2 weeks. Well two weeks from yesterday to be exact. I'm not quite ready to start all of that up again, but by then I wil be. I'm almost there.

Ok, well that's my life and my reflections. It's all I got. Hope everyone had a wonderful new year and have a great 2010. here's to a great year ahead!!

Jame

Okay, I've never actually read this book so this might be difficult. It's a guide to writing fantasy fiction, and it's got a title like "The Dangerous Guide to Writing Fantasy" or "The Perilous Guide to Writing Fantasy." Or maybe something involving treachery? Or dirt? It was more evocative than just the basic "Writer's Guide to Fantasy" sort of thing. I could have sworn that it was written by Diane Duane, but according to all the lists of books she's written it wasn't her, so the author (definitely a woman) either has a name that sounds kind of like "Diane Duane" or writes YA fantasy like Duane does. Or maybe both. It's fairly well-known, but I can't seem to hit on anything Google-able. Thanks for any help!
